urban planning and the heat wave
yes, there is a connection - it's called the urban heat island effect.
another example of the unintended, yet major, consequences of planning decisions. it's easy to say now that it was poor planning, but i can't help but be acutely aware that the decisions we're making now - that seem so responsible and sustainable - could be just as disastrous, if not worse.
it's a lot, sometimes.
The rapid development of Southern California over the last 50 years has created structures and landscapes that retain heat better than dry desert chaparral. Golf courses, shopping centers, housing developments and lush lawns trap heat during the day, keeping temperatures up at night. The warm nights lead to torrid daytime temperatures because heating already warm air doesn't take long, he said.
The numbers tell the tale: Between 1901 and 2000, the average daytime temperature in Southern California has gone up by three degrees, Patzert said. But nighttime averages have risen by seven degrees.

man
i accidently bought tickets to see al green and hot chip on the same night.
oh well. i guess it's not really that much of a dilemma. sorry, hot chip. i'm going with the reverend. i'm sure you'll make someone on craigslist very happy.

if it's going to stay this hot out
i'm going to have to buy more skirts.
i also just discovered (after living in it for a year and a half), that my house has air-conditioning. it's not really working at the moment, but i imagine a quick servicing will do the trick.
my room is like a little greenhouse in the summer, and i'm beginning to wilt.

two important things i learned this weekend
1) justin timberlake's new album is titled 'futuresex/lovesounds.' i believe he just reserved himself a space on hump island.
2) jodie sweetin (stephanie from full house) will be hosting a new dance show on fuse called 'pants-off dance-off,' which just makes me happy and i don't know why.

what to do
on one hand...
i've been looking forward to this weekend for monthes
on the other...
i've got mono
on one hand...
i'd get to see my 12 closest friends from college, altogether, in one place
on the other...
no matter how careful i am, i could infect someone
one one hand...
i'd get to visit a beautiful ranch in colorado - ponies and lakes and wildflowers
on the other hand...
there's a very sweet boy to take care of me here
on one hand...
i'm know i would have fun, despite my illness
on the other...
i can't drink, can't smoke, and tend to get tired and grumpy by 9 o'clock at night
i know that not going is the right thing for my body. i'm just not sure about my mind.

so...
i have mono. yes, mono.
i also have a predisposition towards whining when i'm sick, so i'm going to keep discussion of this little malady to a minimum. no sense in subjecting you all to my proverbial pouty lower lip.
on the brighter side of things, i think i've finally mastered the art of napping.
