i'm writing a case study on the aluminaire house right now. it was a prefab house designed by albert frey and lawrence kocher for a 1931 architecture exhibition. frey was a student of le corbusier, and the aluminaire house was modernist to its bones. it was constructed entirely of steel and aluminum, with most of the furniture built right in. the beds were suspended from the ceiling. the chairs were inflatable, and the dining room table retracted into the china cupboard. the house was designed to be completely independent of daylight, with neon lights in front of all windows, and UV lamps for easy tanning. the advent of mass production meant it was affordable. it could be constructed onsite in just 10 days.
i love past ideas of the future. they are all so possible, and yet so ridiculous.
