paper streets

bethany and i went on a walking tour of echo park a few weeks ago. there are networks of stairs and trails that lead to arts and crafts bungalows hidden away on the los angeles hillside. these houses can't be reached by car - residents park on the street below and literally hike into their houses. the staircases are public easements on private land. they're called 'paper streets,' because in city plans they are depicted as paved, vehicular roads.

very interesting. i got a little distracted by the cars.
